On the Boy Scouts' decision regarding homosexual scouts

by Dan Phillips

If you're looking for a bit of Biblical commentary, and you don't want yours served "dainty" —after all, here you are, looking at Pyromaniacs — check out From 1990: Second-Hand Values or Can Conservatism Save America?, over at my place.

I honestly have nothing against conferences

by Frank Turk

The pastoral staff at my church is at a conference this week. I go to a conference once in a while; sometimes I speak at one.

If we cause people to want to be speakers at conferences rather than faithful church members and pastors, are we doing the right thing?

"Who are you to judge?" dodge (NEXT! #31)

by Dan Phillips

Challenge: Who are you to judge [insert actions or words here]?

Response: Absolutely no one. But God is. I'm just someone who can read, believe, think, understand, discern, and affirm out loud.

Sufficiency of Scripture concisely defined

by Dan Phillips

I can't believe I haven't posted this before. It's the best concise definition I've ever seen, and it comes from this book, page 220 (reviewed here).

"Scripture contains all
the divine words needed
for any aspect of human life."

There y'go. You're welcome.

The "God and evil" dodge (NEXT! #30)

by Dan Phillips

Challenge Version A: Why does God permit evil?

Response: Good thing He does, eh?

Challenge Version B: Can God be good and all-powerful, and permit evil?

Response: [Eyeing challenger.] Evidently.

The pseudo-sufficiency Pushmi-pullyu

by Dan Phillips

In sum, it goes like this:
Of course I believe in the sufficiency of Scripture. It's just that we need to hear things from God that aren't in Scripture, and Scripture doesn't tell Christians how to get them.

So I'll tell you how to get them.
Just like that.

The "pious heretic" dodge (NEXT! #28)

by Dan Phillips

Challenge: Anyone who does good works in the name of Jesus must be acceptable to God. Especially if they're really-really good.

Response: ...and the man who rapes your daughter but gives her car an oil change because he "loves" her so much should be acceptable to you?

Tersely put: "continuationism" self-refuting

by Dan Phillips

The very fact that "continuationists" acknowledge the need to make their case to Christians by argument is, itself, a devastating and sufficient refutation of the position.

Why the Emergent "Movement" Keeps Stalling

by Phil Johnson

  • For all their talk about community, Emergents are too individualistic to hang together.

  • For all their talk about conversation, Emergents mainly just like to hear themselves prattle.

  • For all their talk about humility, Emergents begin with an incorrigibly arrogant worldview.

The "scientific evidence" dodge (NEXT! #27)

by Dan Phillips

Challenge: Unless you give me (materialistic) scientific evidence for the existence of God, I will not believe.

Response: ...and the materialistic scientific evidence that "(materialistic) scientific evidence" alone can and will always be dispositive of everything is...?

The Japan/God dilemma (NEXT! #26)

by Dan Phillips

Challenge: So, does the earthquake in Japan prove that God is benevolent and impotent, omnipotent and malevolent, or imaginary?

Response: Sorry — you are...?
