Spurgeon the Cessationist

Your Strange Fire Dose of Spurgeon
The PyroManiacs devote some space each weekend to highlights from the lifetime of works from the Prince of Preachers, Charles Haddon Spurgeon.  The following excerpt is from The Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit, volume 58, sermon number 3,290 "God's hand at eventide."
"Faith healing is grand, but faith-enduring is grander."

The days of special visions and voices and prophesyings have passed away, but we can still say with Peter, “We have a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts.”

Good quote. I agree completely, and yet there are good folk in the Church who disagree, like John Piper who quotes Martyn Lloyd-Jones:

"It is perfectly clear that in New Testament times, the gospel was authenticated in this way by signs, wonders and miracles of various characters and descriptions . . . Was it only meant to be true of the early church? . . . The Scriptures never anywhere say that these things were only temporary–never! There is no such statement anywhere"

Don, I understand that we can find past greats that will bolster whatever arguments we have, but you'll notice that the Spurgeon quote contained Scripture germane to the point.

And any honest reader of Lloyd- Jones (even his main disciple Murray finally admitted this in his book, Lloyd-Jones: Messenger of Grace) knows that some of his positions on the Holy Spirit were a little "out there."

IMO, DMLJ is not someone you want to use as your go to guy on the doctrine of the Holy Spirit.

Our friend, Kevin Bauder, has a short, helpful article on cessantism worth reading.

What would you call these incidents in Spurgeon's life?

I'd call them "Incidents in Spurgeon's life." I've read 50,000 pages of his sermons and writings and he was a cessationist. Next?

Thanks Kerry. My you really do have an unction from our Lord to stay in the Holy Writ, and study, and work hard for the Gospel.
Thanks brother. Have a terrific week in our Savior's joy and peace.
