Written-by-man dodge (NEXT! #38)

by Dan Phillips

Challenge: The Bible was written by men. We shouldn't take it too seriously.

Response: ...and your evaluation of the Bible was spoken by...a what, now? So how seriously should I take that?

Met with quotes from the classic theological works of the steamboat: but...but...but....

Then nothing but smoke and hot wind.

That poor guy can't believe anything anybody says to him by his own standards.

Yep. Because if he were to reply, "Yeah, but what I'm saying is true," then the inevitable response would be...

Fact-It "was" written by men
Fact-20,000 + denominations who cant agree on it
Fact-God never said there would be a supreme book
Fact- You lose, NEXT!!

I don't understand the logic of todays little saying , especially considering yours guys faith group has only existed since the 1600`s.Why would anyone in there right mind trust your groups opinion on anything? Doesn't that sound crazy, it just goes to show that anyone can be trusted after some time in history passes providing cover.

Simplicity itself:

Fact-Your comment "was" written by___?
Fact-billions and billions don't agree with you
Fact-God did bear absolute witness to the Bible
Fact- You're clueless. NEXT!

Admit it, and there's help.

Continue to live by that river in Egypt... and you know what's coming, and you know it's right (Rom. 1:32)

quoting Uh Oh: "considering yours guys faith group has only existed since the 1600`s."

What faith group would that be? I think most of the readers here would like to trace their "faith group" back a bit further than that - even to being chosen to belong to the group before the foundation of the world.

DJP said...

Yes, that's just one of many possible roads.

But in keeping with the spirit (and intent) of NEXT!, we'll hold him to this one: the Bible was written by man...according to the comment that was written by ____?

Gotta love the double entendre of the TP graphic.

Also gotta love the double entendre of Uh Oh's Blogger name.

I am just disappointed that Uh Oh only claimed 20,000+ denominations. All the cool Roman Catholic apologists are now claiming it is 40,000+. And if Uh Oh is not Roman Catholic then he could have claimed 40,001+.

Webster Hunt (Parts Man) said...

Uh Oh,

Where did you learn all of your facts? Who were they written by?

Also: if you went out to lunch today, or really any other day, did the cashier give you correct change?

The faith group is clearly the group called Calvinists and I do believe just a couple weeks ago you wanted to know about missionaries who only taught Calvinist doctrine. What do you not understand about the 1600`s sir.

Point proven?

Billions and billions have never believed in sola scriptura, once again 16th century concept.

Instead of snide as normal immature remarks please prove me wrong on the number of church groups. Please!!!!! Wikipedia says 33,000. Nexttttt

Not catholic, just raw common sense.

DJP said...

Oh, goodness. You're not even close to the target. Here, let me help. Just please calm down, and focus.

Now, do you even know what NEXT! is about? Did you click on the hypertexted NEXT! in the post, and read the original column explaining the series? Perhaps you should do that now.

OK, then: what was the one focal point of this post? And what is your one comment on that one focal point?

To be published, your next comment must answer that question directly. Focus, concentrate; we can do this.

I think we've found our One-Star hater!

That's one strike. Look, I know it can be hard to focus, but please do: the question is very simple. I'd like to have a dialogue, but there's no dialogue with radio static.

You get two more tries, then it's a permanent ban.

Only after Uh Oh answers my questions. Then, have at it.

Uh Oh I think I see the issue here. You don't know what you're talking about. Does that clear things up? Y you no use logic?

IOW, you are not the center of the universe, nor are you the measure of what is true.

I'm putting all my eggs in the Psalm-119:89-basket.

And Doug... LOL. Took me a minute to get it. Classic Theological Works of the Steamboat...

My sister, Mary, who says she follows Jesus, and the four gospels, especially the Sermon on the Mount, disregards Paul's epistles out of hand.
I said, "Mary, what do you mean?"

Mary: "Paul is just a man, like any other man who says he hears from God."

Me: "You are in big time trouble Mary. Paul is an Apostle of the Lord Jesus, and since you acknowledge the Gospel of Luke, you might want to read his Book, Acts, where Luke, a good friend of Paul tells us a lot about God through all this."

My sister shook her head, and simply disagrees with her little brother.
I realize she is dead in her sins for now, and can not see the truth, but I pray for her. And I pray for Uh Oh as well, that our Lord will open their heart, and touch their mind, as He did ours.

Keep on Dan.

The Bible was written by men. We shouldn't take it too seriously.

How do you know it was written by men? Did you see that? Or did men tell you? O_O

Webster Hunt (Parts Man) said...

I hate that Uh Oh decided not to dialogue and engage the post. That would have made for a productive meta.

The Mighty Presup takes down another strawman. Kapow!

DJP said...

So you don't believe Uh Oh even exists. Interesting.

After preaching most Sundays for the past two and a half years, here is my conclusion: THE BIBLE IS AMAZING. REALLY, REALLY AMAZING. I have believed it is inerrant and sufficient for several decades now, but carefully studying sequential texts week in and week out has given me a whole new awe for the beauty, unity, and connections within the words God has given to His people. I've read plenty of books by men, and the Bible isn't one of them. Only the Bible is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword.

LanternBright said...

There are exactly two virtually absolute certainties about any given Pyro meta:

1. a shout-out of sorts to everyone's favorite lurker, the One-Star Hater

and

2. a drive-by comment ninja like Grant H, who clearly has NO IDEA AT ALL what a straw man argument actually is.

Morris Brooks said...

Whenever I hear that type of response, or the prattle of those who exalt their own wisdom and intelligence over the Scriptures, a couple of Scriptures come to mind.

Isaiah 2:22 Stop regarding man, whose breath of life is in his nostrils; for why should he be esteemed.

And for those who give in to the opinions of those types:

Galatians 1:10 For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a bond-servant of Christ.

@Grant H.

*sigh* You missed the point, didn't you?

DJP:
In each, the challenge will be some shallow, evasive, clichéd, yet atrociously-popular dodge that often derails conversations. Times beyond count, I've seen good folks pay out enormous time dealing with such as if they were serious, sincere, and thoughtful — when they usually aren't.

Anonymous said...

It's a circular argument. Post hoc ergo propter hoc.

A. The bible was written by man about a man
B. the guy claimed to be god

Therefore the bible was written by god. Uh oh is absolutely right in his argument.

DJP said...

So we have one commentator who doesn't know what a "strawman" is, and another who doesn't know what "post hoc" is, among a great many other things.

You also get a chance, UUIR: did you click on the NEXT! hyperlink? Do you know what these posts are about? And so, do you have an actual comment about the actual post?

DJP said...

Note to observers: you see, this is a much-beloved dodge among the God-haunted, and users hate seeing it go down in flames so easily. But not a one can even put together two cogent on-topic attempts. Well, I said "two"; has there even been one cogent, focused, on-topic attempt to resuscitate this dodge?
