Note to Phil Johnson:

by Frank Turk

Consider this a reminder, and get back to work.

But for the fans of this blog:

Free teamPyro t-shirt to the first reader who can identify what comic book this is from, and I'll throw in a mug if you can tell me what issue.

YOUR ONLY HINT: this image has not been altered in any way EXCEPT that the word "PYROMANIACS" was BLACK in the original image.

Oh yeah -- almost forgot: offer expires Friday at NOON CENTRAL TIME. Tomorrow at NOON.

The great thing about this contest is that there's no way to google search this one. You either know it or you don't.

shoot man, i don't know. my education is severely lacking in the area of comics.

Screaming Pirate said...

I am going to have to second Ghost Rider.

FX Turk said...

dave & pirate: Nope, but that's a really great guess.

And I'm dying to give a hint now as nobody will ever guess the answer.

I have no idea, since the extent of my comic book knowledge Archie and Veronica, and I don't think they count.

Somewhere this went from being a test of obscure comic book geek street cred to a guess-what-comic-book-characters-I've-heard-of shout fest.

Frank, you can't really expect anyone here to know the answer. That's like asking baseball trivia at a Tupperware party.

FX Turk said...

Everyone who has guessed since my last post: Nu-uhn. No.

And I am not Dr. Thomas. My only internet alias is "centuri0n" except for that time at CARM when I went by "vermillion" in order to rankle the admins there.

Cubby Martinez and Habitans will vouch for me on that one.

Why do you think I offered such a sweet prize? I wanted everyone to feel quite depressed that they spend all their time reading "Spurgeon" and "Piper" and "the Bible", but they can't figure out who the daffy cycle guy that cent just posted is.

Also, I hadn't posted here on the front page in a long time, I am very put out that James White is going to be in MO this weekend and I'm going to miss his debate, and I am also wildly jealous of your Dad going to Italy for a week.

Darlene said you were getting "it" next week and I volunteered to take her seat at the "ceremony" and take "pictures" since she was going to be in "Italy", but she said it was "private".

So if I post obscure comics in order to torment the good readers of this blog this weekend, I've got my reasons.

Matt Gumm said...

Hint? Also, if B&W was the original, my money's on an Indie title.

Jonathan Moorhead said...

I confess that I queried, "must be a rival pyromaniac," on Google web and images but came up empty.

Darlene said you were getting "it" next week

Pec - I thought you were keeping "it" in the family... Now everyone's going to know. I sure hope "it" doesn't hurt your dad's career.

And they have a ceremony for "it?" Man... what is America coming to?

Matt Gumm said...

Wait, was that Pecadillo in the new eBay commercial?

Daredevil. X-men. X-factor. Tales of Suspense.

This is Batman or Azriel or Detective Comics when the Azriel character took over for Batman when Batman got hurt. Azriel got out of line and started killing people. I think Robin had to don the Batman costume then and come after this Batman

FX Turk said...

I am deeply sorrowed by the cultural insousiance demonstrated by all the BAD GUESSES so far.

Nobody even has an informed guess?

Batman? What kind of guess is that?

Speedball? Doxo: you have just tipped your hand, little bro. You're not half as smart as we think you are.

Well, you have until noon. I have meetings until then, so you might as well try some really crazy guesses SINCE ALL YOU'RE DOING IS GUESSING.

Here would be my guesses if I didn't know the answer already:

Vampirella
theRook
Savage Sword of Conan

And those are the only hints you are going to get. The picture itself ought to be a slam-dunk giveaway.

Big hulking ski-bike riders from the Planet Pyro?

Bit long for a comic-book title, that.

I know it's not Woman's Weekly...

Shredder, Dr. Doom, Skeletor, Psycho, or Hordak?

I wish I hadn't left my comics in a box in Louisiana.

I'm gonna guess Venom, Issue #9.

You people.

You can't take the image to the local comic shop for a free teamPyro t-shirt?

Where's the creativity?

local comic shop?

There might be one every three doors down in the US, but the only local shop here is the Costcutter supermarket...

Steve, oh, I still don't feel bad about my comic-book ignorance.

They don't have them every three doors around here, either. Frank must live in some weird place like Oklahoma or something.

Oh, and I did find this.

Next time I'm going to make the FREE STUFF offer harder. Out of spite.

It appears to be a character from the British comic magazine 2000AD (which also spawned Judge Dredd). The strip the character appears in is ABC Warriors and the characters name is Deadlock. As far as the specific issue -- sorry, I don't have that information -- I'll keep looking, though!

DJP said...

Steve suggests donating it to Dr. Wright.

Well, Steve, if we really want to honor Dr. Wright, here's what Frank should do.

Take someone he likes here who has guessed wrong, and say, "My dear friend _______ guessed wrong... but he really loves this comic book, and believes in this particular issue passionately -- so I'm going to pronounce him the winner and give him the shirt!"

candy said...

DJP.....I don't think Frank should give the shirt to anyone unless they have read every single comic produced by the cartoon represented. Otherwise, they are not really knowledgeable or academic in their answer.

Jeremy Weaver said...

SPAWN.

Deadlock (of ABC Warriors fame) - for sure - but which issue?

H-O-L-Y Christmas!

gods.geek GOT IT RIGHT! See: I figured when Gordon Cloud guessed Judge Dredd, he knew the publisher of the comic, and he'd be back ina snap with the right answer.

But somehow, gods.geek IS THE WINNER!

'geek: e-mail me, and I'll get your info and send you your choice of TeamPyro t-shirt. Check out the store, pick the color/design, and e-mail me. I'll do the rest.

Wow. Somebody won the free stuff. Nice work.

P.S. -- this scan is from the final issue of the ABC Warriors, which is issue #8.

Kay said...

And you know what's really embarrassing?

2000AD is the only comic-book I've ever heard of...

candy said...

Sigh. I never win anything.

candy said...

Hey. In my research though, I found some health and properity comics by Oral Roberts. :)

Kevin Jackson said...

3 things motivated me in my quest for the correct answer:

1) I love a challenge. I will spend hours to days searching for the answer on the internet, in books, in magazines, etc. when a challenge is placed before me.

2) Before I was God's Geek I was a comic book geek. I have to admit I have let my comic reading habits slide, but I still have a storehouse of useless knowledge from comics.* Like Gordon Cloud, my first thought was Judge Dredd, but when he was shot down so quickly I re-evaluated my guess. When I found out that it was from 2000AD (originally) I wasn't surprised. One of my guesses was actually Marshall Law, creation of Kevin O'Neill, who also worked on ABC Warriors for a time.

3) Now I can wear my Pyromaniacs t-shirt as a badge of honor!

Thanks Frank/centuri0n for the challenge and for the t-shirt!

* Although this answer didn't come from my storehouse. I posted the picture on a comic book forum and asked for assistance. Many thanks to Banana_Oil at Newsarama.com for the assist!

DJP said...

Candy -- that's wonderful; I love that!

FX Turk said...

Here's a little secret about this contest: I spent my profits on the current sales of TeamPyro styff on the t-shirt I just sent to gods.geek.

Moral: if you want me to do more giveaway contests, you have to keep buying stuff from the pawn shop. Right now I have enough profit to keep the store open for a couple of months. If we can sell, like, 8 T-shirts in the next 30 days I'll have another contest for free stuff.

FX Turk said...

And I'm still wondering how canadian Daniel knew teh answer. gods.geek admits that he CHEATED (which I respect -- free is free), but Daniel -- "for sure"?

Dude, you're my hero. When I lose 20 more lbs I'm going to shave my head so I can be just like you.
