New Post

Our Blogroll

by Phil Johnson

...has been in need of an overhaul for some time. I never was really happy with the categories, because some blogs really fit under one or more of my headings. When we went to a gangblog last year, I dumped the "irritating", "worrisome," and "disturbing" categories altogether.

Now I've done away with all the categories and ordered my list in a quasi-alphabetical order. Some of them are by author's name; some by blogtitle. The difference hinges on how much the blogger him/herself seems to want to be anonymous.

Anyway, the only distinction between entries now is the large-type treatment I have given to the blogs I read daily because I think they are predictably significant. Even that much categorization is largely arbitrary, and I wavered on a few. In a perfect universe, Fred Butler (for example) would get a large-type listing, but I'm his boss in his real-world job, so 1) I don't want him to get cocky, and 2) I don't want to be accused of favoritism. So I decided to let Fred work harder for the large type.

Frank Turk and Dan Phillips prolly ought to add their own faves to the list.

People always ask how to get on our blogroll. The answer, until today, was "write blogposts that regularly catch my attention." Henceforth, however, we're going to make it easy. If you want to be on our blogroll, post the "Friend of Sinners" banner with a link back to PyroManiacs in your sidebar or in some other permanent place on your blog; then send us your URL. (If you do it via a message on Facebook rather than e-mail, you'll avoid my spam filters.) As long as your blog contains no objectionable content (porn links, vile language, or Emergent promo material) we'll add you to the blogroll first chance we get.

I hope that doesn't make the blogroll too unwieldy. We'll see.

Answer to today's most-frequently-asked question:

Yes. Whether you have your own blog or not, feel free to add me as a friend in Facebook.

Answer to today's second most-frequently-asked question:

It's not hard to insert the graphic in your sidebar. If you use Blogger, simply open the template code in the dashboard. Now locate the section that includes sidebar data, and add the following code at an appropriate location:

<a href="http://teampyro.blogspot.com/"><img src="http://www.spurgeon.org/images/pyromaniac/TeamPyro/fos_lg.gif" title="Friend of sinners" border="0"></a><p>

Don't worry if the code in your template looks confusing. You should be able to locate the section for the sidebar (it may even be labeled).

Cut and paste to make sure you get it right. Substitute "fos_sm.gif" for a smaller graphic. Thanks for the linkage.

You kidding? This is going to be kind of fun to watch, I think.

I love how Emergent material is in the same category as porn and vile language. That says something about the unity of the Faith espoused here.

I've changed my last name to Aaron.

Glad the blogroll is updated, but I do wonder if the new "rule" for getting added will make it unwieldy.

It really does help to know that those on your blogroll have been "discernment approved" by TeamPyro in some way or other.

I had to smile at the Fred Butler comments.

"Emergent Promo Material"

LOL. If that ever happens, we'll get to see who is actually the fastest "zapper" in the West, you or Dan.

I just wanted to point out that Doug Wilson has explicitly endorsed the Po-Motivator posters.

Just another reason to love him, I guess.

And Fred Butler needs some beating down -- he's a little to smug. I carry-over from his KJVO days, I suspect ...

Now that is funny!

Dudes, I am not a Facebooker, but I am a Xangan. Can I still be Phil's friend?

BTW, I have the FoS link on both of my blogs, one on Xanga and one on Blogspot. So do I get extra blogroll merit?

Blogger Puritan:

Of course we have a Pyro 'Friend of Sinners' link on our blog. Who wouldn't.

I appreciate being blogrolled though I haven't actually added the graphic and the link yet. I'll do it soon as I get the chance, though I am but an insignificant flea in the blogosphere.

Blogger Sewing:

I already have the "Friend of Sinners" graphic and the link, but if I ask to be blogrolled, does that mean I have to make an effort to update my blog from time to time? ;)

Blogger Fred Butler:

I truly do appreciate how you and Frank have my spiritual well being at heart.

Makes me all weepy.

Now I'm going to seem really dumb. How does one post the "Friend of Sinners" banner in your sidebar? A link to some instructions would be nice.

I hate computers.

Blogger The Doulos:

Hmmm. Sounds like solameanie needs a "Friend of Geeks" logo too.

:-)

Hey, someone shrunk my name on the blogroll!

At least they didn't make it disappear . . . yet.

Blogger steve:

You're not alone, solameanie. I expect once I finally get my blog started, my likely futile attempts to add graphics of any kind could drive me to pummel my computer to smithereens with a frozen meat chub.

Blogger SolaMeanie:

I can add pictures to my posts, Steve..but that's about it. I'm really not that savvy when it comes to Blogger. Just hitting the "post" button is a major accomplishment for me. Oh, yes..I do know how to put a link in the sidebar. Does that win me a kewpie doll at the carnival?

Joel's confession time here. I really, really REALLY miss my old Royal manual typewriter. The loud clacking, the fingerprints from changing the ribbon, the frustration I could take out on the keyboard with no diodes to blow. Those were the days. And the old teletype instead of the laser printers. That thing sounded like a machine gun.

Sola: You and me both. I loved my manual typewriters. My first one was my mom's hand-me-down Smith Corona, but my dearest one was an old second-hand Underwood.

Blogger A Servant of the King:

I've added your link and graphic to my blog but I couldn't find your e-mail. Hope this is ok.

Blogger Puritan:

To add the Friend of Sinners. Add a page element HTML to your blog and then put normal html link in.

Blogger northWord:

*woot* I finally figured it out! (also thanks to puritan's simple words above)

though I rarely post there and don't get much traffic, I appreciate the coolness of having that link there, thanks for the opp Phil!

it doesn't matter a whole lot if I have an appearance in your sidebar, but couldn't a URL just be left here?
http://knowrthword.blogspot.com/
like that?

6:57 PM, October 11, 2007
Blogger SolaMeanie:

Yep, I figured it out too, with Phil's help.

BTW, Phil..if the blogroll gets too unwieldy, you might make a separate page of them similar to your "annotated bookmarks." Hopefully not too many of us will rate under "Really, Really Bad Theology." (smile)

I'm disappointed. When my grandma tells me that my chocolate cake is moist and flavorful, I really don't know if my cake is any good because she'd say it was even if it were burnt, chalky, and had lumps of baking soda throughout.

When my dad tells me that my chocolate cake is moist and flavorful, I'm certain that he likes it, because I've heard more than once, "You'll get better with practice."

Opening up the blogroll makes an accomplishment (recognition of a blog)somewhat vague and undefined, like the recommendation of my grandma. I think I liked the old way better.

I've always had Pyromaniacs linked at my own blog, but have added the image: http://alindsey4.blogspot.com/

More worthy of your attention is my group blog, www.strangebaptistfire.com, which has also had Pyromaniacs linked, but I've added the image there as well.
