Irony

by Phil Johnson

ou know how we joke that evangelicals always lag a decade or two behind in their desperate striving to be cool? Check this out: Now that evangelicals have made hippie chic standard attire for church, war protestors have started dressing as if they were going to church.

Mark Twain: Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society.

Nor those who dress dowdily...

In Australia I haven't really come across the "Sunday Best" mindset.

Maybe we're so casual that we never really took to much notice of it.

Not to say that it is a bad thing to be well dressed for Sunday.

Though I see little spiritual significance in what we wear (or much really in the NT). We certainly can sin in the way we dress.

Dressing provocatively for instance; and not just sexually, I remember a young church lad who wore a t-shirt glorifying Buddha while he was playing drums at Church. hmmm....

Maybe something can be said for dressing up after all...

wordsmith: I can name three women right now who would prove you and Twain wrong.

I'll not name them for the sake of the weaker brothers reading.

Sounds like the war protesters have adopted a "seeker sensitive" approach to make those unfamiliar with protesting feel more comfortable. It's protest for those who don't "do" protesting.

It's true; we're so lame when we try to be cool.

Personally, I would love to have a single file line of Emergents walk through a local junkyard while the electromagnet on the crane is switched on. The resultant scene might make people think the Rapture is occurring.

Problem is Solameanie some of us older folks have so much metal in our bodies that what could happen to "pierced and hip" Emregents could also happen to us.

Which could really be painful I mean can you imagine being slammed up against one of the more "pierced" ones? Ouch.

The true irony is the fact that these kids are clearly 'dressing the part' of serious protesters, which is disingenous, just like it is for some folks to dress up for church, or for some uber-hip 'pastors' to dress _down_ for church.

If you're really a smelly hippie, protest as one. If you're a smelly hippie Christian, well...take a bath before church, ok? I don't care if you're wearing jeans & Birks when you're standing next to me on Sunday or wearing a suit. You might pull one over on your brothers & sisters, but God is not mocked. Honesty is still the best policy.
