I had a great idea for a blog post, but Life got in the way. Shameless self-promotion today instead.
Yes, I really, really am going to be in Winona Lake, Indiana, the weekend for the 2012 Every Thought Captive Conference. (click the sidebar ad to get info) If you're anywhere in northern Indiana, Southern Michigan, or Western Ohio, you could drive in. I am driving from Little Rock, so you prolly aren't driving farther than me. (I'm looking at you, Ted and Zach)
The topic? They say "sexual confusion," but it's really about marriage and society. My hour will be interesting to say the least, and Tim Challies (headliner, superstar, publisher, pastor, humble disciple) will have two hours before and after to fix whatever it is I break. There will also be an open forum on Saturday afternoon after the talks.
Come join us -- it'll be a great time to be inside and stay warm and think about, well, lots of stuff.
Also: you need to be following Chris Rosebrough on Fighting for the Faith as he covers the Code Orange Revival. Stellar.
See you this weekend; if not, be in the Lord's house with the Lord's people on the Lord's day this weekend.

Everybody knows what this means, right?
OPEN THREAD!
And Tom cracks open the first can.
It's going to be a good day.
I think Frank should drive to Indiana with a sign that says, Frank Turk is a menace and must be stopped." you get the menace and 3rd person in one package.
Ooh. Can we get those bumper stickers in the TeamPyro online store?
Chantry:
Not now, but soon.
Can the bunny go in the background? And can he be sobbing? Crying bunnies always make people look more menacing.
Interesting that Elevation has pulled Chandler's video now for "copyright" reasons. And that The Gospel Coalition closed comments on Justin Taylor's post after it was closed. The silence from TGC on this crowd is getting deafening.
I would hardly call Justin Taylor's comments silence. I'm sure we'd all agree that when the kids with the tin foil hats show up it's hard to maintain orderly comments. Not that anything like that would happen here.
Thanks again Frank for reminding me of Chandler's ability to bring light. He did a bang up job. I guess I'm just stupid but I can't see why the Elevation guys would have a problem with it.
Finally, unless Jesus is kicking off the return tour in Indiana you'd be hard pressed to get me there but I will lift up your time to the Father.
Wish I could be there. Challis and Centurion. That would be sweet.
Lord bless you all, and all who come to hear His Word. Amen.
On behalf of Frank's "Signs and Wonders 2012 Tour" I'd like to say that we are absolutely thrilled to have him coming up for this conference. I've been reading his articles and posts for probably 7 years now, and I am always impressed with his ability to get right to the heart of a matter, and make me LOL simultaneously.
Frank told me that this is the very first conference that he's been asked to speak at, so I can only assume that the reason for this oversight is due to his wry, "don't-think-you're-getting-anything-past-this-goalie" profile picture.
Frank- drive carefully, and remember that there's a rowdy bunch of confused people waiting to hear you as you straighten us all out...
My apologies. I tried rating this post, and after I "liked it," it said I "hated it." So it's my fault. I messed it up.
But I really like Scooter and Tom's idea for a bumper sticker--though I'd rather have it on a refrigerator magnet.
Merilee --
We can do both.
"Liked it." "Hated it." Really just opposite sides of the same coin, y'know?
I am bummed. You're within driving distance of a few hours, but I am housebound.
Have fun.
You know: I put that bunny up there because I couldn't think of anything else to put there, and I'm loving it.
Message to all of you who are reading this thread and not contribuing:
I am very disappointed in each and every one of you. A thread this important should not get so little play. I expect this thread to be over 100 comments by midnight.
A thread this good deserves a good video of a "performance" at Steven Furtick's church on Christmas Sunday 2011... Yep, that's right. Christmas Sunday! - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFZToaayrY8
OK, maybe not performed on Christmas Sunday... It was uploaded on Dec 25, 2011. I may be wrong on the performance date. But really, that's completely irrelevant.
Chantry,
Stop being so judgmental.
Frank,
Is that the bunny from Monty Python?
"be in the Lord's house with the Lord's people on the Lord's day"
How I love to do this. Is there a better place on Earth?
"For a day in your courts is better
than a thousand elsewhere.
I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God
than dwell in the tents of wickedness." Psalm 84:10

@ Eric,
Your reply suggests a dark spot in your heart. Repent.
@ Dan McGhee,
What are you doing to us? That vid will be burned on my retinas now!
I'd comment, but I don't have anything worthwhile to add. . .
Except that I felt peer pressure from Chantry to comment, and so I did.
word verification: cominten - what us folks from MS do when we want to say something on a blog.
Wish I could be there. A hot topic...no pun intended.
Frank!
How'd you get a picture of my boys' bunny? That is a perfect likeness of
Uncle Podger, himself. I think royalties may be in order, yah?
But maybe we can make a trade.
"Be in the Lord's house, with the Lord's people, on the Lord's day."
Is that a copyrighted Frank-ism? Or can I put that on my blog too?
Drive safely,
Julie
Actually, "cominten" is our version of the ComIntern - it is the international & intentional arm of the Commentariat®.
We can comment? Ever since Frank mentioned that he wrote the code that causes the picture on the pyro banner to change I haven't been able to stop clicking "refresh." Never noticed that before...
*was convicted so I removed the anti church part of the original comment
Potato, potahto, Chantry. I'll not be swayed by your fancy word-trickery from making valuable comments on this most important thread.
By the way: anyone have a link to the sermon Matt Chandler preached at Code Orange? I want to see why they didn't think his sermon was "about Jesus".
Well, the YouTube has been nuked, but Chris Rosebrough plays it in full on this special edition of fighting for the faith:
http://0352182.netsolhost.com/F4F011412.mp3
Frank, per your request, I will refrain from calling your conference "Axis and Challies".
Tom,
In order for the comment thread to reach 100, you need a combination of the following:
10 people who wholeheartedly agree with the post.
10 people who comment on some fringe aspect of the post (such as mentioning the bunny).
1 person who disagrees with the post and calls Frank Turk a monkey's uncle.
2 people with less courage who agree with that guy.
5 people who take issue with those three commenters.
1 Dan Phillips who will remind those three that they didn't actually read the post.
5 people who posted something that they later deleted (or were deleted by blog administrators).
1 person commenting about their own blog and inviting others to come for a visit.
3 people who comment with profound words that everyone should be soundly instructed by.
4 people who upload links to funky videos.
1 Frank Turk lightly toasting the first guy who disagreed.
2 people being offended.
5 people defending Frank Turk's comments.
An apology (could be between any 2 people who commented in the thread).
And 1 Phil Johnson to close down the comment thread because we all need to settle down.
We may well be on our way, but I have WAY more important things to do today...like...you know.
Where's Matt? or Stuart Wood?
I do not want Tom Chantry to be disappointed in me.
@ Merrilee,
Well, we already have some of that, but if it will help I'd be willing to call Frank a monkey's uncle. Of course, I don't think that will be the hardest requirement to fill...
Of course, instead of writing blogposts, Frank could be doing something useful. Like ministry.
Oh, wait...
Yeah. I think the whole ministry/conference thing is a blind. Frank didn't write a post this week because he was beating Osama bin Laden to death with a meat chub. Oh wait...
I'd like to see Kerry find a Spurgeon quote for this thread.
wv: essectiz. What this thread is.
I have absolute confidence in Kerry's ability to come up with something appropriate.
Okay, Tom. I'll join in briefly.
For the record, Frank is NOT an Em****t. Nor does he have immediate plans to publish a verse-by-verse exposition of the Song of Solomon with accompanying video.
Just clearing the air.
L I B B Y !
I'm waiting for Moffat to come to his senses and make Libby the Doctor's next companion.
I only came here to see what Frank wound ramble on about Mark Driscoll and that poor British man. Now I'm sorely disappointed.
watching the code orange "revival" now... sad what passes for Christianity these days. Listened to Chandler's sermon, he did a good job. I fear his being there lends the event credibility that it should not have. It's frustrating that's for sure.
Did anybody take the bunny out for coffee to see what he's said about before just blasting the poor, sad thing out into the internet?
Man, that's a conference I wish I had time to drive up for. Plus, it's a nice town. My sister and her husband went to college there.
Did you take the bunny out for coffee before using its likeness?
Long way to 100. I live around 50 miles from conference. A seed has just been planted in my heart to go. Pray the seed grows quickly!
Cap,
Just sow your seed of faith and you will reap a harvest!
Any post with a (pyro)maniacal fluffy bunny deserves 5 stars.
I give up. 100 isn't happening. But we got halfway there.
I challange your maniacal fluffy bunny to a staredown with a slightly confused sparkly curly haired Tennessee Rex kitten.
F Whittenburg
Bunnies are yummy in a red wine sauce.
Or just sauce, if you're a Baptist.
Thatisall.
...wish I could think of something humorous to say but, right now I don't feel very bunny.
Here's hopping that everything goes better than expected.
Rachael,
Does your recipe come out chewy? My mother-in-law made bunny once for Easter Sunday, and yes, it tasted like chicken, but you had to chew it for, like, ever.
I'm guessing the best way to eat bunnies is fried. But once again, Baptists don't drink.
You ate the Easter Bunny? That's rich. I ran him over once on the way to a Sunrise Service.
I feel kind of bad for whoever spoke at Code Orange last night. I mean, going up against Driscoll and a porn star has to be bad for ratings.
On second thought, that bunny looks like it might need some serious ministry instead of confrontation. My T-Rex kitten is still willing to go.
F Whittenburg
Frank you made my day.
@Tom: In some parts, it would be considered wasteful not to eat the rabbit after running it over.
Here's a portion of Scripture that came to mind for us to ponder:
"And the LORD spake unto Moses and to Aaron, saying unto them,
Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, These are the beasts which ye shall eat among all the beasts that are on the earth.
Whatsoever parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted, and cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that shall ye eat.
Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that divide the hoof: as the camel, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.
And the coney, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.
And the HARE, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you." Lev. 11:1-6
(And there are certain Wabbits we need to beware of: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGH03m2pGEM&feature=related)
Bunny works better in stew or slowly barbecued than it does fried.
Very tender after a long, slow time on the charcoal.
(I can't resist!)
*cue Mr. Nezzer's deep voice:
"The bunny, the bunny, OH I ate the bunny. I didn't eat the soup or the bread, just the bunny."
"The bunny, the bunny OH! I love the bunny. And now I feel sick in the head from the bunny."
(This is rather sad, isn't it?)
Frank: I pray that you will pass the time safely and creatively as you travel, and may the Lord be glorified and the attendees edified as well.
First!
Don,
It is funny that you mention considering portions of Leviticus, as I just happen to be reading through Andrew Bonar's commentary on Leviticus. It has brought so me to a greater appreciation for the work of salvation and how thoroughly sin must be dealt with.
Libby;
My only demands (after, you know, my first demand) is that it's for at least one whole season, and I get to be the 12th Doctor.
Because that's what the mythos needs: another short, fat doctor, but this time an American.
Rachael, now you have me humming "Spill the Wine." See what you've done to me?
To add to the previous comment, as an ex-radio guy, there are days when I wish I could take a bulk tape eraser to my skull and get rid of all those hundreds of songs that will burst forth in my memory, unbidden or no.
"Tim Challies...superstar"
Hmmm...interesting choice of words. But perhaps you said it with a bit of tongue in cheek humor.
I once heard Pat Robertson say, in speaking of an upcoming event: Everybody that's anybody in the Christian world will be there.
But then again, there really are SUPERSTARS in Christendom these days, right? Speaking of superstars, I remember Andrew Lloyd Webber's classic rock opera, "Jesus Christ Superstar." That was looked upon with much disapproval by most of the, shall we say...Christian world. But the world in general loved it.
"Or just sauce, if you're a Baptist."
So glad I'm not a Baptist because I enjoy drinking my wine. Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Zinfandel, just to mention a few. And what's with so many Protestants using grape juice instead of wine at Communion? Don't quite get that. Ah...but not the Lutherans. They like Mogen David.
"Spill the wine and take that pearl."
I like that one. For the longest time I thought the lyrics were: "Spill the wine and dig that girl." I think these lyrics go much better with the ethos of the song.
I attended a Southern Baptist church while I was in college (in Oregon--a "mission church"). Maybe y'all have heard this one before:
Southern Baptists don't believe in premarital sex--because it might lead to dancing.
(Frank, you have my permission to use that one for your talk. You're welcome.)
71 comments. Plus this one.
Hmph. Shouldn't've bothered posting today.
73
@Darlene I thought it was "spill the wine, take that girl," which, of course, would be a better fit into the whole 1960s scene and all.
(Are we at 100 yet? I'm doin' my best, here, folks.)
WV: gonven, which is where nuns live.
Spill the wine, take that girl. How apropos!
How does one make italics anyhow? Since it's an "open thread" I thought I'd ask.
Darlene, you use these characters <> but with an i in between them. Then type what you want in italics. Immediately afterwards, type those characters again but with a /i in between. Same thing but with a b and a /b for bold.
@Tom: I have yet to succeed at italicizing and boldfacing (as well as properly linking--but we will save that for the next open thread).
So here goes nothing:
Merrilee Stevenson is a menace and must be stopped.
SWEET!
@ Merillee,
You realize you can do more than one at once, right?
(<> with an i inside, <> with a b inside, text, <> with a /i inside, <> with a /b inside)
Like this?
Tom Chantry is my homeboy.
Thanks, Tom! I had given up trying to do that because no one else explained it so simply for my little mind to grasp it.
So here's the next question: what is the <> with an a inside used for?
It makes your text look like this. Although it doesn't lead anywhere. Inserting an actual hyperlink takes a bit more typing.
And I can't tell you how annoyed I am that blogger supports strikethrough for posts but not in comments. It's discriminatory, I tell you.
Wow. That is definitely the advanced course! I haven't even figured out how to do strike through for my every day use. Yet.
But I'll give the a a try.
Because no self-respecting 100-comment thread would be complete without this
I'm so glad that worked! But now that all five of my children are awake and two are singing the harmonic score to the Star Wars theme (and disputing over the notes), I must leave class early.
Thanks again.
Your kids fight over that too?
It's true. I can't make this stuff up.
Here's my last question for this thread:
I wonder which of the three Team Pyro men would be the first to agree that open threads are a menace and must be stopped.
"Last Question"? When we have a legit shot at 100?
Over? It's not over. Nothing is over until I say it's over! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
Tom. The last fourteen comments (fifteen counting this one) have been between the two of us.
I don't doubt that we can reach a hundred, but I'm almost certain we'll earn ourselves well-deserved rainbow afros and red noses for this comment thread.
Wasn't that the point?
It's been a couple a days since the post, so I went back and re-read it (which I highly recommend).
And there it is, in the first paragraph: shameless self-promotion.
So yes, that is the point.
Unfortunately, I have nothing of my own that I am interested in promoting, at the moment.
Only needed a few minutes to find something.
I almost forgot to mention John MacArthur. That always gets the numbers up.
(The link is to one very convicting/edifying message.)
If you want to raise the comment bar, you can always discuss the "Jesus Hates Religion" video on YouTube and Kevin DeYoung's interaction with the guy who made it. That's some pretty good stuff, there.
Ok...here goes for italics.
What's up doc?
Almost there...
Great blog with good material that I will come back and read often.
Come see mine!.71
Perfect, DJP, we were missing one of those. And for once I'm guessing that comment won't be deleted by a blog administrator!
I've still not succeeded with the bold. I keep getting this:
Your HTML cannot be accepted: Tag is not closed: A
100! Do I get a prize?
The bold still isn't working. Let me get this right. For bold:
<> with an ab in between
text
<> with an a/b in between
Correct?
not an ab in between, just a b
Well, bold and bold and italics aren't working for me.
On another note, as regards that Jesus Hates Religion vid. An Orthodox priest friend of mine has a decent reply on his blog. Since I still have trouble with links, his blog address is: roadsfromemmaus.org
The title of his post is: "Why I Love (True) Religion Because I Love Jesus." DeYoung's response is listed on his blog as well. When I saw Fr. Andrew the other day he told me that he'd gotten over 300 responses in less than 24 hrs. - many of which he didn't have posted because they were the same repeat rantings. He also said that he'd received 32,000 hits within the span of a day. He has the stats listed just to show the popularity of that video.
Here's a try for bold.
What's up doc?
Darlene,
Well done on the italics.
I had the same message when I was attempting a hyper link. It just means that you forgot to put the backslash with the second a.
Hope that helps.
And now that we've finally surpassed ourselves, I've got two Team Pyro posts, and a Hither and Thither to catch up on, not to mention--oh the list really is endless. Congratulations to you, Tom. I really didn't think it was gonna happen back when you first mentioned it--like 3 years ago.
(I think now all we really need is for Phil Johnson to close the thread by saying that open threads are a menace that must be stopped.)
It's a hollow victory: I was calling for it by midnight of Wednesday/Thursday.
Until I get formatting down properly I request that this thread doesn't shut down. Thanks for the link, Tom Chantry. It's quite interesting. I'm off from school today so I get to goof off - something my students like to do regularly. :-) Btw, can we do smiley faces here?
Darlene! Have you forgotten that you are among Calvinists? We only do sober faces reflective of our piety here!
Ah, yes. So no smiley faces allowed is what you're saying...correct? :-) ;-) :p
I dunno... I've had some fun times with my Calvinist friends. We've had laugh fests, and played Boggle for hours, and enjoyed light-hearted banter while imbibing palatable vintage. Perhaps their view on lapsarianism makes them a bit less dour than most Calvies.
A question just popped into my mind on another thread, but it seemed to fit better here. If you're going to criticize the theology of a Mormon, are you supposed to take him out for coffee first?
Tom: I would think it depends upon the situation. Of course it seems to me that building bridges with folks by personally meeting with them (you know,in the flesh) is the preferable route to constructing a platform to be heard. Talking with people and not at them engenders respect and increases the probability that one's interlocutor will consider what's being said. And footing the bill for their coffee wouldn't hurt either. :-)
Tom:
They can always order a hot chocolate.
